City of Cape Town Let's ACT at Home

Short description:

To continue building a City of Hope that is safer, cleaner and more resilient for our residents and natural systems, the City of Cape Town, along with many other cities around the world, has committed to being carbon neutral by 2050. In order to reach this ambitious and important goal, we all need to ACT in our homes and places of work to build a more sustainable future.

Buildings generate more than 50% of the city’s total greenhouse gas emissions, largely through their energy use. Driving radical energy efficiency towards net zero carbon buildings is a key focus area for the City, and achieving it is critical to reaching our energy and climate goals.

A net zero carbon building is one that produces as much energy as it consumes. This is achieved through reducing energy demand through good passive design; installing high efficiency lighting and power systems, including appliances; and by supplying the building’s energy needs from renewable sources.

To help residents and developers incorporate these cost saving measures into their homes, the City has developed a number of resources, so visit our exhibit at Building Centre and the website below to find out more. Let’s ACT. For a stronger Cape Town.

Claytile

Short description:

The De la Hunt family has been making clay bricks near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape for over 50 years. Pioneered by Garnet de la Hunt, Joostenberg Brick began supplying the local building industry with quality clay bricks in 1970. His son Julian came on board in 1987 to establish a second factory at a site nearby, which not only produced clay bricks, but various other clay masonry products such as quarry tiles. Currently the predominant focus is clay brick production. The Group is, however, well positioned to develop additional clay masonry products to meet the diverse requirements of the Western Cape building and construction industry and to help address the housing crisis in impoverished communities.

The Heavy Clay Products Group is the largest independent producer of clay building bricks in the Western Cape, with a present production capacity of around 12 million bricks per month. It supplies a variety of customers and projects, from commercial and industrial buildings, schools, police stations and hospitals to residential properties. The Group is focused not only on existing markets but is particularly interested in the low-income housing arena, which faces significant challenges including capacity, quality of workmanship and building materials, and financial constraints. The Group is committed to working together with Government, Business and Communities to make a significant contribution to reducing the huge housing deficit.

The factory is a modern, automated plant with reliable and consistent production of high-quality bricks throughout the year. This is critical in the Western Cape as bricks made according to the old method of clamp firing (outdoor ovens), are vulnerable to rain in winter which may affect both quality and production. Eight years ago the Group invested a large capital sum in building this factory to ensure continuity of quality and supply.

In addition, the production process is substantially more environmentally friendly than older methods, using less clay and fuel and yielding very low emissions. The factory complies with all the provisions of the New Air Quality Act of 2004 and has been granted the New Order Mining Right essential for primary brick producers. Claytile has substantial clay reserves already secured to guarantee future production capacity.

The Group continues to investigate current research and developments in the heavy clay industry worldwide. It strives for continuous improvement in production processes, using innovative technologies to deliver affordable, sustainable and quality products to its loyal customers

Crystallite Stone Bathrooms

Short description:

Crystallite

All products featured on this website and in our catalogue are made from a material called Crystallite® which is manufactured from a specialised compound of natural minerals, pure polyester polymers and quartz crystal aggregate. This results in an ice-white solid surface product with a warm, velvety touch that is similar to natural stone.

The characteristics of Crystallite® are as follows:

It is a solid surface resin based material meaning that the consistency is the same throughout the body of the product. There are no surface coatings thus eliminating delamination, surface cracking or crazing.

It is highly chip resistant. In the event of an accident ie. dropping a heavy object onto a product which could chip the surface – the repair of such damage is simple and can be done on your premises.

It is generally scratch resistant due to the use of unique crystal particles in the manufacturing process. Enough force will however scratch any surface but this can easily be removed without damaging the product due to the solid surface nature of the material.

It is non-porous and does not absorb water preventing micro-organism and bacterial growth – creating an extremely hygienic product.

It is stain resistant and has been tested with hair dyes, cigarettes and red wine. It takes no more than a quick rub down with a scourer and some dry scouring powder (Vim) to remove the stain.

It might fade slightly over time if exposed to direct sunlight but can be brought back to its original colour with a quick sand down.

It is completely recyclable. Old products can easily be restored to original condition and re-used.

It is effectively a self renewing surface which matures and becomes stronger over time.

The material is tough and can withstand rough handling. It can be used in areas susceptible to vandalism and high traffic ie. hotels and malls.

Cleaning instructions:

WARNING:

The use of metal scouring pads or harsh chemicals such as acetone, ammoniac cleaners (e.g. Handy Andy), paint stripper or thinners will damage the surface of your bath or basin, and result in a change of colour.
