Concrete Garden Furniture

Old World Concretes was founded in 1919 by William Spenser Winter.

Old World first began casting small concrete garden pieces in the backyard which he delivered to clinets by ox wagon. As the popularity of this quality products grew, he received requests for many more precast items.

In 1920 William Winter opened the first showroom in Jeppe with his son Hardwick Stephen Winter and changed the ownership tp W. Winter and Son. Many years of success at the Rand Easter Show led them to be gold medal winners for their outstanding show stands. During this period ornate fireplaces, polished marble terrastone bathroom items (such as sinks, basins, etc.) and their popular chimney piece designs, which can still be seen on many older Johannesburg houses, were some of the masterpieces of the Winter team.

The Leadership of the company was taken over by Cedric Stephen Winter, the son of Hardwick, and Erica and Richard Freeman (Daughter and son-in-law of Hardwick). Fountains and large garden ponds became very popular in the 1960's and 1970's along with many styles of precast walling. The company has always shown an ability to change with the times, a characteristic that has served them well as a greater demand in the building architectural fields has grown.

Now with branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the company moves into the future with Martin and Jeremy Winter (sons of Cedric Winter). Products continue to be of the highest quality, manufactured and delivered with the utmost respect for customer satisfaction. The integrity and high moral standards of the company, carried through each family generation from its founder, continue to make Old World Concretes a leading precast concrete manufacturer in South Africa.

At Stonecast, our focus is on individual need, and so each item manufactured is treated as unique. We manufacture a very wide variety of products. Our range includes pots, planters, bowls, water features, benches, fireplaces, custom pavers, signage , sanitary ware and furniture. We specialize in custom architectural casting and mould making, made to client specification.

The Stonecast sanitary ware range includes freestanding basins, shower trays and baths. The counter-top basins we manufacture are guaranteed not to crack with hot water. The Bathsheeba bath is a freestanding stone bath and the Stonecast shower trays are custom made to fit your plug. The temperature resistant concrete basins manufactured by Stonecast are formulated using our own recipe, developed by cementitious chemist Greg Dunn. And, after 12 years of successful trials, we are proud to say that our products will last. We also make custom baths, basins and showertrays made up to client specification and we are continually developing new shapes and techniques to satisfy current trends and desires.

All our shapes are originally formed at our workshop in Cape Town. We make our moulds in steel, silicone or fibreglass.  Together the team has over 60 years experience in manufacturing concrete products and both partners have background experience in restoration of buildings, set-building and prop-making in the film industry, mould-making and model-building. We are confident that our products are unique and are of superior quality and design.

Although we can produce many items from each mould the only “mass” in the production coming from Stonecast is the heaviness of our product. We embrace the heaviness as it gives our products permanence and elegance in an environment with destructive factors such as weather, wear and tear and theft. We also manufacture our products using lightweight polymer stone materials. Products made from these materials are more expensive as manufacture requires artisanal skills and expensive raw materials. Installing products made from these materials is easier and often this often makes them more cost effective as expensive cranes are not needed such as would be the case with their concrete counterparts. The fibreglass planters have a finish that very closely resembles the concrete option.

Each Stonecast product can work as an individual item or work in combination with other Stonecast forms. This applies especially to water features where different Stonecast components can be combined to create unique, interesting waterfeatures specific to the client’s requirements. We do not stock “off-the-shelf” waterfeatures but we do assist the client with a selection of options available to suit all their waterfeature requirements. Unfortunately, we do not build waterfeatures on site. Rather the components are precast and then assembled, installed and tested on site.

Our philosophy at StoneCast is simply to create a beautifully designed and well-made products that will embellish and enhance their surroundings for many years to come.
